Pastel on Artist-made Paper
And Unryu Collage
|
Jeanne Demotses studied art at Hunter College, the Art Students League and the
Westchester Art Workshop. Although her primary medium is oil, she often works
in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, monotype and collage. She also experiments in making
her own paper to use as a ground for her pastel work as well as using the paper as a collage element. Her work ranges from the figurative to the abstract and often combines aspects of both.
For over 15 years, Jeanne has maintained a studio on in Peekskill and is a member of that community’s growing artist district. She was a member of Gallery 44 North in Peekskill, a founding member of Gallerie JJENTH, a member of the visual arts committee of the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill organizing several juried exhibitions, and is on the faculty of the Putnam Arts Council. She also teaches classes and workshops in various places in Westchester as well as portrait painting in her studio. Jeanne has exhibited work in galleries and public spaces and has paintings in many private collections here and in Europe.
Artist Statement
My work encompasses many modes of expression. Media such as oil, watercolor, pastel, collage, monotype as well as hand made paper are used in tandem. I do not choose the medium to work in so much as the piece dictates the medium to be used.
Iconic imagery often informs my work. When that happens, I find the use of hand made papers important to convey the symbolic nature of the piece. At other times, the abstract nature of the work may require mixing media to produce the ‘felt’ experience.
Working in many media and in many styles including figurative or realist has given me the gift of wide ranging exploration. It has also allowed me to bring a certain freshness to each new piece I begin by forcing me to think in terms of the requirements of each new medium and not to think about the end ‘product’.
